However, industry insiders suggest that progress on the project has been slow, partly because Elden Ring does not exactly align with this business model. From Software sold the Elden Ring license to Tencent in 2022, and in the same year, the Chinese company acquired a 16% stake in the Japanese studio. At the time, Tencent had not disclosed that it would work on a mobile game based on the IP.

However, “several dozen people” reportedly began working on a prototype in 2022. Tencent recently canceled a mobile adaptation of the Nier franchise due to doubts about its monetization, and it appears that the Elden Ring project at the center reflects some of these same issues. The Chinese gaming industry took a hit in the stock market at the end of last year after a regulatory body proposed several rules to limit monetization and engagement methods. Tencent and NetEase publicly contested these proposals, which cost them billions of dollars in the stock market.

Ultimately, under pressure from these giants, the Chinese government intervened by dismissing the man overseeing the regulatory authority and quietly abandoning the proposed restrictions. © ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
